As a leading water pump manufacturer, we take pride in providing high-quality self priming pumps and expertise in the field. In this article, we will share our knowledge and insights into self priming pumps and their applications.
What is a Self-Priming Pump and how does it work?
A self-priming pump is a type of pump that can create its own suction. It does this by using the energy from the flowing liquid to create a vacuum, which in turn creates the suction needed for the pump to work. The process of priming is not required with this type of pump, as it will prime itself automatically.
This type of pump is typically used in situations where there is a need for an uninterrupted supply of liquid and where it would be difficult for someone to manually prime it each time it needs to be used. They are often seen in water wells, cleaning systems and irrigation systems. They are also used in cases where there is a need for a pump that can start up quickly and provide continuous service. The self-priming pump is designed to work with a minimum of priming. In some cases, they can be primed by air pressure or by using a small amount of water before starting the pump.
What are the Advantages of Using a Self-Priming Pump?
When choose a self-priming pump, there are several factors that make it a preferred choice:
-Ease of use: Self-priming pumps are easy to operate and require minimal setup time. They do not require a separate priming mechanism or manual priming, which can save time and effort.
-Reduced maintenance: Self-priming pumps have fewer parts compared to other types of pumps, which means they require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan.
-Flexibility: Self-priming pumps can handle a wide range of fluids, including those with high levels of solids or gases. They are also suitable for applications with varying flow and pressure requirements.
-Efficiency: Self-priming pumps are designed to operate with high efficiency, which means they can save energy and reduce operating costs over time.
-Versatility: Self-priming pumps can be used in a variety of applications, from water supply and irrigation to construction and industrial processes.
Popular Types of Self-priming pumps and their features

Working Principle | The peripheral self-priming pump is composed with a casing. Before starting, the water pump fills the pump casing with water (or there may already be water stored inside the casing). After starting, the high-speed rotation of the impeller causes the water in the impeller channel to flow towards the volute casing, creating a vacuum at the inlet which opens the check valve, allowing air to be drawn into the pump through the suction pipe and reaching the outer edge of the impeller channel. | The jet self-priming pump is composed of an ejector system, which creates a vacuum at the nozzle to achieve suction. It is called venturi system which consists of a Venturi tube and a nozzle. The JET pump can also achieve the self-priming function by installing the Venturi system in a water tank. Only a portion of the fluid pumped by the pump impeller flows out of the pump body, while the remaining portion flows back and is ejected through the nozzle of the Venturi system to form a jet. The jet draws water from the suction chamber to create the required vacuum for self-priming. |
Advantages | Compact structure, easy operation and maintenance, smooth running, high efficiency and long service life, and has strong self-priming ability and other related advantages. | High lift and moderate flow. When the lift changes from the highest to the lowest range, the required power changes little, so it is very reliable to use. Its structure is simple and easy to maintain. |
Applications | The impellers are more compact and can only handle clean water. It is mostly used for home water supply for water tower and water tanks. And it is usually combined with pressure accessories for automatic water supply. | It is suitable for home water supply, cleaning and flushing pressure boosting, and is usually used in combination with pump body pressure switches, buffer tanks and other components to form a home water supply system. It can be used to transport clear water, slightly polluted water or other non-corrosive liquids. |
In general, self-priming pumps are a reliable and cost-effective option for many pumping applications, offering ease of use, reduced maintenance, flexibility, efficiency, and versatility.
